ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth girls’ swim team claimed second place in Friday’s virtual Penobscot Valley Conference championships.
The Eagles racked up 267 points as a team to finish behind only champion Mount Desert Island in the 10-team field. The performance marked the Ellsworth girls’ team’s best-ever finish in the event.
Kristy Barry set a new team record for Ellsworth as she posted a time of 2:13.22 in the 200-yard individual medley. The junior then earned an individual win for the Eagles as she finished first with a time of 59.65 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke.
Ellsworth also got strong individual efforts from Caroline Mazgaj, who placed second in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.26) and 100-yard backstroke (1:11.45). Kiera Springer (5:40.89), Lillian Frank (28.30 seconds), Ellie Anderson (59.39 seconds) and Leah MacPherson placed a respective second, fourth, fifth and sixth in the 500-, 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles.
Ellsworth’s unit of Anderson, MacPherson, Mazgaj and Berry took first with a time of 1:47.86 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 200-yard medley (Barry, Mazgaj, Kiera Springer, Lilja Hanson; 1:57.05) and 400-yard freestyle relay (Kiera Springer, Anderson, MacPherson, Barry; 3:58.48) teams placed second.
In Saturday’s 1-meter dive, Kiera Springer (341.10), Kaela Springer (328.15) and Elena Springer (307.75) gave Ellsworth a sweep of the top-three places. Kiera Springer’s score set a new team record.
The Ellsworth boys also competed in the PVC meet, though scores from that contest have yet to be announced. Results will not be tabulated until Old Town/Orono swims next week.
