ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth girls’ swim team recorded its best-ever finish at the state swim championships when it placed fifth of 21 teams in Monday’s Class B meet at the University of Maine.
Senior Ellie Clarke, competing in her final meet for Ellsworth, set a team record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 1.49 seconds. Clarke also competed in the 50-yard freestyle, in which she placed fifth with a time of 25.57 seconds.
Freshman Elena Springer also set a team record for Ellsworth with a score of 310.7 in the diving competition. Springer claimed fourth place in the 10-diver field.
Kristy Barry placed fifth of 29 swimmers in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:21.74 and finish two spots behind Clark in the 100 backstroke. Other Eagles to earn individual medals were junior Caitlin MacPherson, who placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle, and senior Miriam Nelson, who was eighth in the 100-yard freestyle.
In the relay events, the quartet of Barry, MacPherson, Clarke and Nelson placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay and fifth in the 200-yard medley relay. The group of Abby Mazgaj, Katie Hammer, Kristen Moseley and Lillian Frank finished 11th in the 400-yard freestyle relay to earn a ribbon with a time of 4:18.95.
Cape Elizabeth took home first place in the meet with 487 points. Greely (300.5 points), Mount Desert Island (245 points), Morse (201) points and Ellsworth (184.5) rounded out the top five.
