CASTINE — The Lady Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy sit at the top of the North Atlantic Conference softball standings after sweeping weekend doubleheaders over Johnson State College and Lyndon State College.
Playing in Vermont on Saturday, the Lady Mariners downed the Johnson State Badgers 9-2 and 8-2.
In the first game, freshman pitcher McKenzie Burke struck out nine batters in pitching a complete game 9-2 win.
Burke also contributed a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Lady Mariners.
Mallery Stanley had a pair of doubles and sophomore Kayla Higgins of Sullivan had two hits, including a fifth-inning home run, and drove in two runs in MMA’s 10-hit attack.
The Lady Mariners also were aided by five Badger errors.
In the 8-2 second game, Casey McCloskey pitched a complete game four-hitter and struck out 12 batters for the Lady Mariners.
Leah Jackson doubled and singled, Sabrina Keach had two hits and drove in a run and Burke scored two runs for MMA.
On Sunday, the Lady Mariners romped to 12-0 and 23-5 wins over the Lyndon State Hornets.
McCloskey pitched a five-inning, four-hit shutout in the 12-0 first game win.
Burke had a big game at the plate, driving in four runs with two doubles and a single.
Nicole Poland also drove in three runs with a pair of hits and Stanley and Higgins had two hits each for the Lady Mariners.
Burke gave up eight hits in a six-inning complete game win in the second game and went four-for-five at the plate with a home run, driving in seven runs.
Jackson and Megan Russell each had three hits and McCloskey, Stanley, Brittany Hunt and Hannah Seamans had two hits each for the Lady mariners.
McCloskey and Jackson also drove in two runs each.
The 13-1 Lady Mariners, now 4-0 in conference play, are slated to play Thomas College in Waterville for a doubleheader tomorrow.
Two home doubleheaders are scheduled for the weekend with games against Castleton State College starting at noon Saturday and against Green Mountain College at noon Sunday.
