SULLIVAN — It was a big week for George Stevens Academy diamond sports last week as the baseball and softball teams earned clutch wins against local opponents.
The GSA baseball team moved into first place in the Class C North standings Friday when it defeated Ellsworth (10-1) 3-1 in Blue Hill to hand the visiting Eagles their first loss of the season. GSA’s Garrett Parker struck out 10 batters and allowed just three hits in a complete-game effort.
The following day, GSA stretched its lead atop the Class C North baseball standings to nearly 20 points with a 10-0 road win over Sumner. Yet the bigger story Saturday in Sullivan came on the softball diamond, where GSA, which had lost 18-2 to Ellsworth the previous day, beat Sumner 19-9 to earn its first win of the season.
On Tuesday, the GSA baseball team won its seventh game in a row when it beat Sumner (4-9) 17-2 in Blue Hill to improve to 10-1 on the season. On the softball diamond, Sumner (6-7) avenged its loss three days earlier with a 16-0 win over the Eagles (1-10).
Both GSA teams will play five games in seven days beginning with road games at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, May 23, against Mattanawcook Academy. They will then play at home against Central at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, on the road against Dexter at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25 and at home against Bucksport at 4:30 Monday, May 27, before finishing the season at Deer Isle-Stonington at 4 p.m. next Wednesday, May 29.
