BAR HARBOR — The Ellsworth Little League 11-12 softball team is off to another state tournament.
Ellsworth defeated Acadian Youth Sports 7-3 in Thursday’s District 1 championship game in Bar Harbor. The win capped off an unbeaten district run for Ellsworth, which claimed three wins in as many games to defend its title.
Ellsworth opened District 1 tournament play June 23 with a 9-3 victory over Acadian at Demeyer Field. The team then traveled to Washington County the next day and defeated Calais Little League to give itself two chances at a district championship win in the double-elimination tournament.
That win would come at the first time of asking for Ellsworth, which never trailed at any point in Thursday’s rematch with Acadian. Ellsworth scored three runs each in the first and seventh innings as Lauren Young pitched the team to victory with a strong effort in the circle.
Members of this year’s Ellsworth team were Young, Lily Alley, Kaylee Bagley, Sophie Beal, Allie Bivins, Lizzie Boles, Ally Brown, Whitney Carter, Camryn Clough, Olivia Dane, Kennedy Lambert, Sydney Mason and Jenna Moon. Ellsworth coaches were Karrie Alley, Shawn Bagley and Lyndsy Clough.
Many of those players and coaches also won District titles with the 9-10 team in 2018 and 2019. Ellsworth Little League did not hold a season last year as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The state tournament is scheduled to begin either next Friday, July 9, or next Saturday, July 10, in South Berwick. Hermon Little League (District 3) and Biddeford Little League (District 4) had also qualified for the state tournament as of Friday.
