ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Little League 11-12 softball team is off to the state tournament after going undefeated in last week’s district tournament.
Ellsworth beat Machias Little League 4-1 on Friday at Demeyer Field to finish the District 1 tournament with a 3-0 record. The result followed a win against the same Machias team in Monday’s opening game and a mercy-rule victory over Calais Little League the following day.
In its first showdown with Machias, Ellsworth earned an 11-6 victory to get off to a good start in the double-elimination tournament. That set up a showdown against Calais on Tuesday, and Ellsworth won 15-0 as pitcher Anna Stevens threw four perfect innings.
Starting 2-0 meant Ellsworth needed to win just one more game to be crowned tournament champions, and the team came through Friday night with a 4-1 win in a rematch against Machias to advance to the state tournament. The win came as Ellsworth scored three runs in extra innings to clinch at the first opportunity.
Players on this year’s Ellsworth team were Lily Bean, Callie Chase, Savannah Edgecomb, Brielle Grindle, Natalie Jagels, Kelsie Lambert, Sophia Lynch, Anna Stevens and Jayden Sullivan. The team was coached by Josh Stevens and Steve Sullivan.
Ellsworth’s first state tournament game will be played at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 7, in Glenburn. As of late Friday night, District 4’s Kennebunk-Kennebunkport/Wells-Ogunquit Little League was the only other All-Star team to have qualified for the state tournament.
