Ellsworth 9-10 softball team wins District 1 championship



ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Little League 9-10 All Stars won their first two games of District 1 tournament play last week and clinched the championship Monday evening to head to the state tournament.

Ellsworth began the tournament last Tuesday when it faced Machias Little League on the road. The team recorded a 16-10 win to start off 1-0.

On Friday, Ellsworth went to 2-0 in tournament play with a 9-2 win over Coastal Little League in Blue Hill. Anna Stevens struck out 10 batters for Ellsworth, which recorded 10 hits in the victory.

Ellsworth then had the opportunity to clinch the championship undefeated Monday with a win over Machias, and the team didn’t let it go to waste. Lizzie Boles hit a walk-off single for Ellsworth to give the team a 6-5 win in the eighth inning and clinch a spot in the upcoming state tournament in Glenburn.

This year marks the first season for the city’s youth teams under the the Ellsworth Little League name. Under the former charter, Down East Family YMCA Little League, Ellsworth won the 9-10 district crown in 2017 and made it all the way to the state championship game in 2015.

Members of the Ellsworth 9-10 All-Star team include Lily Alley, Kaylee Bagley, Lily Bean, Camryn Blugh, Lizzie Boles, Callie Chase, Savannah Edgecomb, Brielle Grindle, Natalie Jagels, Sydney Mason, Anna Stevens and Jayden Sullivan. Josh Stevens is the team’s head coach, and Ron Bean and Steve Sullivan are assistants.
