BREWER — The Sumner Tigers’ season came to a close Wednesday night as the undefeated Calais Blue Devils cruised to a 10-1 win at Coffin Field to claim the Eastern Maine Class C softball championship.
Calais was able to take advantage of two Sumner errors in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth when Morgan Whitten followed a one-out Sarah Leighton single with what appeared to be a triple of her own. Unfortunately, for the Tigers, the officials ruled that Whitten did not tag all the bases and she was called out. The run continued to count but Sumner no longer had a runner at third base, and with two outs, the momentum of the inning was gone.
The Blue Devils erupted in their next two turns at the plate, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to put the game out of reach at 10-1.
Sumner ended the season at 12-3 and will lose only two seniors to graduation.
