BUCKSPORT — Two Hancock County softball squads are set to meet in a matchup of 2-0 teams this week after posting a pair of victories to begin their respective seasons.
Bucksport breezed to a pair of easy wins in last week’s contests against Orono and Sumner. In Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island opened the season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Presque Isle as one MDI pitcher threw a gem in the opening game.
Last Wednesday, Bucksport began the season with a 13-1 victory against Orono at Orono High School. The Golden Bucks scored three runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to claim a mercy-rule win in their opening contest.
The Golden Bucks won even more decisively Friday as they claimed a 17-0 win over Sumner in their home opener. Allie Pickering hit a grand slam for Bucksport, which got a shutout effort from Madison Frazier in the circle to cruise to another dominant victory.
On Saturday, MDI claimed a 6-1 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader against Presque Isle. Pitcher Addy Boyce had a varsity debut to remember as she threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and just one walk allowed, and Mollie Gray added a home run in her first high school at-bat for the Trojans with a towering blast to left-center in the second inning.
The second game between the Trojans and Wildcats was a higher-scoring affair as MDI outlasted the visitors 14-13 to cement the doubleheader sweep. Leah Carroll hit a home run for the Trojans, who held on for a tight victory over their Aroostook County foes after Presque Isle fought back from an 11-4 deficit to cut the home team’s lead to one run.
Bucksport and MDI are scheduled to meet one another at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at MDI High School. The game will be the only matchup this season between the Class C Golden Bucks and the Class B Trojans.
Bucksport will play an upcoming road game against Belfast at 4 p.m. Friday, April 30. The Golden Bucks will then play home games against Central at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, and Ellsworth at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 4.
MDI will begin a three-game road stand when it faces Old Town at noon Saturday. The Trojans will then take on Brewer at 4:30 p.m. next Monday, May 3 and George Stevens Academy at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
