Soccer: Bucksport boys clinch record 9th win; EHS wins 5th straight

BUCKSPORT— Two local boys’ soccer teams have extended their respective winning streaks with one clinching the program record for wins in a single season.

Bucksport stretched its winning streak to seven games with recent victories over Searsport and Piscataquis, the latter of which gave the Golden Bucks a record ninth victory of the season. Elsewhere, Ellsworth stretched its streak to five as it followed last Tuesday’s win against Mount Desert Island with two wins later in the week against Caribou and another Monday at Hermon.

The Bucksport boys’ team, fresh off a dominant 13-0 win last Tuesday against Shead, posted another shutout two days later as it defeated Searsport 3-0 in Waldo County. Kai Brown, Evan Donnell and Jason Terrill scored for the Golden Bucks, who limited the Vikings to just a single shot in the win.

Bucksport then kicked off October on Monday by defeating Piscataquis (1-6) 6-2 to clinch the first nine-win season in program history. The Golden Bucks (9-1) got a hat trick from Donnell, a brace from Jacob Brezovsky and a penalty kick from Colin Simpson to recover from a 2-0 deficit early in the game.

“In [my early years as head coach], we had plenty of talent, but when things started to go wrong, we’d get down by a goal, and the whole team would get discouraged,” Bucksport head coach John Boynton said. “To see this group recover from a couple of early missteps [Monday night] and change the momentum of a game was really exciting.”

The victory over Piscataquis came as Bucksport played under the new soccer field lights in front of a significant home crowd. The game marked Senior Night for the Golden Bucks, who owe much of their recent success to the hard work and dedication of this year’s senior class.

“It was certainly fitting that the ninth win came on Senior Night; this group really took ownership of helping to turn around the program,” Boynton said. “It was really cool to be playing under the lights with a large crowd cheering us on. You could see the effect it had on the game, and it’s great to see our community coming out to support the team.”

Ellsworth got two goals apiece from Cruz Coffin and Silas Montigny and one from Koa Barrett on Thursday in a 5-1 home win over Caribou. Facing the Vikings in a rematch Saturday in Aroostook County, the Eagles got two goals and an assist from Luke Perry as well as tallies from Coffin and Montigny in a 4-1 victory.

On Monday evening, Ellsworth improved to 6-3-1 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Hermon (0-5) at Hermon High School. Perry came through with the game’s only goal as he slotted home a penalty kick for the Eagles with 34 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the contest.

Ellsworth will play on the road against Foxcroft (5-1-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, before hosting John Bapst at 6 p.m. next Wednesday, Oct. 13. Bucksport will be back at home at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, against Central (2-7-2) before playing 6 p.m. home games Monday, Oct. 11, against Sumner and next Wednesday against Mattanawcook Academy.
