Russell Named Academic All-American

CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy men’s soccer player, Benjamin Russell of Farmington, was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) / Capital One Academic All-America Division III Third Team. Russell is the Mariners first Academic All-American since Nicole St. Pierre earned the distinction in volleyball in 2008. He is the soccer program’s first Academic All-American since 1995 when B.C. Voyou attained the status.

A junior, Russell majors in Marine Systems Engineering and boasts a 3.95 grade point average. He is also an active participant on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

The All-North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Second Team Selection was named the Mariners Athlete of the Month for November. He ended the season as the team’s leading scorer, tallying six goals and three assists to help lead MMA to the NAC Semifinals. Three of his goals were game winners. None of his markers were bigger than his overtime goal in the Mariners NAC Quarterfinal upset of defending champions Thomas College. Russell was named to the NAC All-Tournament Team for his efforts.
