CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy has named a new head coach to lead its women’s soccer program.
MMA announced Monday the selection of Keenan Schaeffer as its next head women’s soccer coach. The Wrightsville, Pa., product comes to the Castine school after a busy past few years that have included concurrent stints in both college and professional coaching.
Schaeffer spent the past four years as head coach and general manager of Hershey FC, a fourth-tier professional team in Hershey, Pa. He also spent time as an assistant coach for the Penn State University-Harrisburg men’s team (2018-present) as well as the goalkeeping coach for the Millersville College (Pa.) men’s team (2015-18).
“I couldn’t be more pleased to introduce Keenan as our next head coach,” MMA Athletic Director Steve Peed said in a prepared statement. “His values emphasizing student athlete experience and development in all phases align perfectly with the culture of the academy and our department. I look forward to the successes we will experience behind his leadership.”
Schaeffer had success as an assistant coach for the Penn State-Harrisburg men, who went 14-4-4 in 2018 and 15-6-1 with a North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2019. His goalkeepers at PSU-Harrisburg and Millersville were consistently among their divisions’ top statistical players at the position.
Schaeffer will also serve as athletic contest coordinator for MMA. As such, he will be responsible for coordinating greetings and accommodations for officials, ensuring proper facility conditions and game environments and serving as the primary point of contest for officials and visiting coaches.
“I am truly excited and honored to accept the position of head women’s soccer coach and athletic contest coordinator at Maine Maritime Academy,” Schaeffer said. “I look forward to continuing to build on the program’s strong athletic and academic history, [and] I truly feel humbled to be working for such an excellent academic institution whose degrees are known and respected nationally.”
At MMA, Schaeffer replaces Eric Terrill, who served in a caretaking role during the program’s canceled 2020 season and athletic department hiring freeze before being named head coach of the Ellsworth girls’ team last month. The Mariners were previously coached by Seth Brown, who led the team to a 2019 conference title in his final season with the program.
Schaeffer will assume his duties immediately as MMA prepares for the upcoming campaign. The Mariners will open the regular season at home against the University of Maine at Fort Kent at 8 p.m. Sept. 1.
