CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy men’s soccer team secured the No. 1 seed in the North Atlantic Conference Tournament with home victories Saturday and Tuesday.
Against Northern Vermont-Johnson on Saturday, MMA received a goal from 2017 Ellsworth High School graduate Colby Clarke in a 3-0 victory. Clarke scored on a bicycle kick for the Mariners’ second goal of the game and his fourth of the season.
MMA then closed out the regular season with a record of 8-6-1 on Tuesday after it defeated Thomas College (12-4-1) 2-1. Evan Backus and Matthew Caron scored for the Mariners in the win.
The victories gave MMA a four-game winning streak to finish the regular season. The Mariners had previously beaten Unity 4-1 on Oct. 9 and UMaine-Presque Isle 2-0 on Oct. 20. Clarke scored the final goal in the win over Unity.
MMA will receive a bye to the NAC Tournament semifinals, where they will play the winner of the Saturday, Oct. 27, quarterfinal matchup between No. 3 Husson (7-8-3) and No. 6 UMaine-Farmington (5-11). The Mariners’ semifinal game is scheduled to be played next Saturday, Nov. 3.
Should the Mariners earn a semifinal victory, the team will play for the tournament championship the following day. Times for the Mariners’ playoff game(s) will be announced once the official matchups have been set. All games will be played on MMA’s Ritchie Field.
