ELLSWORTH — The third time was definitely the charm for the Mount Desert Island girls’ soccer team against its biggest rival.
MDI scored a 1-0 upset of Ellsworth in Saturday’s Class B North semifinal showdown at Del Luce Stadium. The win marked the third playoff clean sheet in a row for the Trojans, who avenged two regular season losses to the Eagles and booked a place in the Northern Maine championship game with the win.
Senior captain Lelia Weir found the net for 10th-ranked MDI (7-10) with 17 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the first half. Third-ranked Ellsworth pressured the Trojans the rest of the way but could not find a goal as the visitors won their third consecutive road playoff game.
Ellsworth (13-4) had defeated MDI 4-1 on Sept. 29 in Ellsworth and 1-0 Oct. 19 in Bar Harbor. The Eagles had reached the semifinals after Megan Jordan’s goal with less than five minutes remaining in Thursday’s home quarterfinal game against sixth-ranked John Bapst (10-5) gave the team a 1-0 victory.
The upset win was the second in a row for MDI, which had previously defeated No. 2 Old Town (11-4-1) 1-0 in Wednesday’s quarterfinal showdown at Old Town High School. Sophia Anderson scored with 11:23 left for the Trojans on an assist from Lelia Weir.
MDI will face top-ranked Hermon (16-0) in the Class B North title game at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3. The game will be held at Hampden Academy.
