MDI Boys’ JV Soccer Finishes Strong

BAR HARBOR — Like molding a vase from a lump of clay, getting a slew of incoming freshmen and integrating them into a working unit is what Mount Desert Island High School boys’ junior varsity soccer coach Brent Barker does. If this year’s incoming class lives up to the potential he sees in them, the future of MDI boys’ soccer will be bright indeed.

The team finished with a record of 4-9-1 but that is no indication of how the squad improved over the course of the season.

“We started out 0-5 but we finished out very strong. I thought we made huge improvements from day one right until the last game of the season. I was very happy with the progression of the group,” Coach Barker said. “When you have 16 out of the 23 players as freshmen, the jump up from junior high soccer to JV soccer is a very big leap. Early in the season these kids were struggling to make that adjustment. They started getting the feel for it later on.”

Looking to the future of the program, the squad he has now could play a pivotal role in the success but the fire needs burn from within.

“There are a lot of kids that have the potential to contribute to the program at the varsity level, whether it is next year or the year after. It is now up to them see how far they really want to pursue it,” said Coach Barker.
