ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth boys’ soccer team recorded its first victory of the 2018 season Saturday with a 2-1 road win against Hermon.

After both teams failed to score in the first half, Ellsworth took a 1-0 lead six minutes, 34 seconds into the second when Nate Mason scored his first goal of the game. Yet the Hawks added a goal of their own just nine minutes later and locked down on defense for the remainder of regulation to send the game to overtime.

Mason then scored the winner with just 51 seconds to go in the second overtime period. His goal ended Ellsworth’s seven-game losing streak to start the season.

On Monday, Mason scored once again for Ellsworth as the Eagles improved to 1-7-1 on the season with a 1-1 draw at home against John Bapst (3-3-1). The result temporarily propelled the Eagles into a playoff position as the 13th-place team in Class B North.

Ellsworth will play its next game on the road at 4 p.m. next Monday, Oct. 1, against George Stevens Academy. GSA defeated the Eagles 3-0 when the teams met in Ellsworth last Monday.
