Mariners Down Clippers

CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy Men’s Soccer team improved to 2-0-1 on the season, beating the visiting Clippers from the University of Maine at Machias 5-1 in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening. Senior Greg Smith (North Yarmouth) and junior Nate Tipton (West Chester, PA) each scored two goals in the match leading the Mariners to victory.

The Mariners started the scoring in the 15th minute when Abdullah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) gathered a pass from Daniel Hassett (Falmouth) and blasted the ball into the upper right corner of the net from 25 yards out. The Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a goal in the 36th minute when Greg Smith finished a cross from Nate Tipton and headed the ball under the reach of the keeper.

Greg Smith scored again in the 78th minute when he collected a rebound and passed the ball past the keeper to give the Mariners the 3-0 advantage. MMA tacked on their 4th goal of the match when Nate Tipton collected a pass from Richie Munster (Greenville) and slipped it into the goal for his second tally of the season.

The Clippers scored their only goal of the game 83rd minute when Luis Herrara received a corner from Devon Whitbeck and headed it by the MMA keeper. Nate Tipton scored on a breakaway just seconds later giving MMA the 5-1 lead and eventual four-goal victory.

MMA keeper Randy Bartlett (Lincoln, NH) got the win for MMA making one save on six shots. Kyle Lancaster took the loss for the Clippers making four saves on 27 shots. MMA improves to 2-0-1 overall while Machias falls to 1-4-0 overall.
