ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday night, edging the Bucksport Golden Bucks 2-1 with single goals in each half.

Ellsworth took the lead just over four minutes into the game when Heather Tupper took a throw-in from Cristin Wright and lined the ball into the net from about 10 yards out.

Eagle goalkeeper Jessica Toothaker came up with a big save on a point blank Bucksport shot after a corner kick at the 21:30 mark.

But 30 seconds later, the Golden Bucks knotted the score when Mindy Pye drilled a shot to the right of Toothaker and into the net.

Ellsworth made a strong bid for the lead on a shot from just outside the penalty box with less than a minute remaining in the half, but Bucksport goalkeeper Bailey Blair came up with a save to preserve the tie.

In the second half, the Golden Bucks increased their offensive pressure, but Toothaker and the Ellsworth defense proved equal to every challenge.

The Eagles finally took the lead for good when Ashley Smith rifled a crossing pass to Katey Curtis at the 18-yard line and Curtis punched the ball into the Bucksport goal.

Both keepers came up with some big saves in the second half. Toothaker finished with five stops on six shots, and Blair had six stops on 17 shots for the 1-2 Golden Bucks.
