ELLSWORTH — Goalkeeper Callie Hammer, a 2017 graduate of Ellsworth High School, was named the North Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after allowing just a single goal in the UMaine-Farmington women’s soccer team’s conference tournament win over the weekend.

Hammer recorded a clean sheet against Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday to lead the No. 2 Beavers to a 1-0 win. She then allowed just one goal the following day as UMaine-Farmington (8-12) upset top-ranked Thomas College (11-5-1) 3-1 to win the conference tournament for just the second time in program history.

Hammer is one of three local players on the UMaine-Farmington women’s team. Leah Stevens, a 2017 Ellsworth graduate, and Adriana Novella, a 2018 Mount Desert Island graduate, both play as midfielders.

With the win, UMaine-Farmington advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The team will play Middlebury College (15-1-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, and would advance to play Mount St. Joseph (Cincinnati) or Illinois Wesleyan in the next round with a victory.
