GSA boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, volleyball enter October on winning streaks

BLUE HILL — The George Stevens Academy boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and volleyball teams rumbled into October on high notes as all three teams finished the first month of the season riding winning streaks.

On Monday, the boys’ team posted a season sweep of Ellsworth (1-8-1) with a 3-0 win in Blue Hill. It was the third win in a row for GSA, which had beaten Deer Isle-Stonington and Searsport by a combined 13-0 in its two previous contests.

Chris Bennett scored the first goal for GSA (7-3) on a penalty kick early in the first half. He then scored again with 12 minutes, 59 seconds to go in the half before Ricardo Sanchez scored the team’s third three minutes later.

On the girls’ side, GSA improved its record to 4-4-1 on the year after it posted an 11-0 win over Deer Isle-Stonington last Monday and a 4-0 win over Searsport two days later. The wins boosted the Eagles to eighth place and have them in position to host a preliminary round game in the playoffs.

The Eagles are also in position to make the Class C volleyball playoffs after recording a doubleheader sweep of Lee/Mattanawcook (1-8) on Friday. The Eagles are now 6-6 on the season and in seventh place in the standings.

Both soccer teams will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 3, as the girls host Ellsworth (3-5) at 3:30 p.m. and the boys travel to Bar Harbor to face Mount Desert Island (3-5-1) at 6 p.m. The volleyball team will host Narraguagus (6-3) at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.
