ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles opened their soccer season at home on Thursday with a narrow 2-1 win over the Hermon Hawks.

Maks Grover put the Eagles on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the game when he took the ball down the left sideline and lined a 20-yard kick into the far corner of the net.

Ellsworth added a second goal in the first half when Brandon Braley scored off a throw-in from Josh Bean.

The Hawks lone goal came just three minutes into the second half when a shot by Chris Allen wound up in the Ellsworth net.

For the most part, the Eagle defense kept the pressure off goalkeeper Steven Mahon, who finished with two saves on seven shots.

For the Hawks, Brendon Dyer had 12 saves on 19 shots.
