JONESPORT — The longest active losing streak in Hancock County high school sports has been snapped.
The Deer Isle-Stonington boys’ soccer team claimed an 8-7 victory over Jonesport-Beals in Wednesday’s game in Jonesport. The Mariners’ overtime win snapped a 32-game losing streak in varsity play dating back to the 2017 season.
Deer Isle-Stonington (1-0) got five goals from Dylan Benner, two goals from Elijah Stinson and one goal from Sean Morey in the high-scoring victory. Benner provided the game-winner for the Mariners with a strike in the second period of overtime.
With both Deer Isle-Stonington and Jonesport-Beals (0-1) low on numbers entering the contest, the two teams played nine-on-nine soccer in what was the season-opening game for both sides. The Mariners had been scheduled to open the season Saturday against Shead, but that contest was instead rescheduled for next month.
Prior to the game, Deer Isle-Stonington had not won a varsity contest since posting a 2-0 win Oct. 5, 2017, also against Jonesport-Beals. The Mariners claimed non-varsity victories against the Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island JV teams last year.
Deer Isle-Stonington will head back to Washington County on Saturday, Sept. 11, for a 2 p.m. game against Calais (0-2). The Mariners will then play their first home game of the season when they host Piscataquis at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15.
