VERONA ISLAND — Vijay Kataria of Castine and Sarah Mulcahy of Baring Plantation took top honors Sunday in the second annual “Bridge the Gap” 10-mile road race.

Kataria, 24, toured the course, which took runners across the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and around Verona Island, in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 24 seconds.

Mulcahy, 27, finished second overall and was the female winner with a time of 1:07:28 in the field of 72 runners.

A much larger field — 209 runners — competed in the shorter five-kilometer race, which took runners out West Side Drive and back to the finish line at the Verona Island rest area.

Top runners in that event were Spencer McElwain, 23, of Old Town in 16:38 and women’s winner Mattie Lord, 35, of Orland, who placed 10th overall in 23:17.

The “Bridge the Gap” event was sponsored by Women Running Wild to help fund a trip to Kieve Leadership School by seventh-graders in Regional School Unit 25.

Following are male and female age group winners in the 10-mile race:

Ages 17 and under – Ray Wood, 14, of Bangor in 1:22.35.

Ages 18-29 – Chase Reidelbach, 19, of Castine in 1:12.12 and Julia Beaty, 25, of Orono in 1:46.01.

Ages 30-39 – Tobin Peacock, 39, of Lamoine in 1:08.20 and Beth Anderson, 39, of Northport in 1:21.14.

Ages 40-49 – Chris Jones, 49, of Bucksport in 1:13.38 and Robin Clarke, 43, of Ellsworth in 1:14.51.

Ages 50-59 – Dick Graves, 57, of Gorham in 1:11.11 and Lisa Kingsbury, 43, of Hampden in 1:22.32.

Ages 60 and over – Dave Samuelian, 66, of Bangor in 1:31.34.

Male and female age group winners in the 5K race:

Ages 1-12 – Brendan Moline, 23, of Orland in 24:50 and Grace3 Beaulieu, 11, of Eddington in 28:36.

Ages 14-17 – Skyler Frager, 15, of Bucksport in 20:05 and Miranda Hotham, 16, of Winslow in 25:09.

Ages 18-29 – Wyatt LaPage, 20, of Castine in 19:49 and Candice Byers, 23, no address given, in 25:02.

Ages 30-39 – Richard Bissett Sr., 39, of Waldoboro in 21:38 and Jenny Pert, 31, no address given, in 23:30.

Ages 40-49 – Will Martell, 45, of Belfast in 19:56 and Cyndie Martell, 44, of Belfast in 27:10.

Ages 50-59 – Ron Haney, 56, of Warren in 22:00 and Jean Jenkins, 51, of Bangor in 29:33.

Ages 60-69 – Bill Hansen, 68, of Surry in 27:30 and Robin Emery, 66, of Lamoine in 27:30.

Ages 70 and over – Lloyd Harmon, 72, of Ellsworth in 25:47.

Prizes for the winners were fashioned from pieces of the 81-year-old Waldo-Hancock Bridge, which is now being demolished.

A third group of runners also participated in a one-mile fun run across the Penobscot Narrows Bridge from the Fort Knox starting line.
