ELLSWORTH — One hundred thirty-five people competed Monday in this year’s running of the Main Street Memorial Mile in downtown Ellsworth.
First place in this year’s race went to Mount Desert Island High School junior Stephen Grierson, who crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 37 seconds. Ellsworth High School sophomore Nick Cormier finished just three seconds behind Grierson to take home runner-up honors.
Charlie Collins of Winterport, Evan Merchant of Beals and Jeremy Foskett of Ellsworth rounded out the top five. Stephen Grierson’s brother, Stanley, took sixth with a time of 5:14.
On the women’s side, Katherine Collins of Winterport was the top finisher with a time of 5:25 and overall place of 13th. Southwest Harbor’s Katelyn Osborne was the No. 2 female finisher, placing 22nd overall with a time of 5:43.
This year marked the 12th running of the Memorial Mile, which precedes the annual Memorial Day parade. The course record is 3 minutes, 53 seconds, which was set by Louie Luchini in the 2011 race.
