ROBIN CLARKE PHOTO Locals compete in Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race August 4, 2018 on Running/Cycling, Sports ELLSWORTH — The 21st running of the Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race was held Saturday, and runners from Hancock County were among those competing in Cape Elizabeth. Matt Barton of Mount Desert finished as the race’s top Hancock County runner with a time of 41 minutes, 23 seconds. Barton, 54, placed 351st in the field of 6,527 finishers. Close behind Barton with was another Mount Desert Island native, Josh Bloom. The 19-year-old from Bar Harbor finished in 41:44 to place 364th. Another 19-year-old, Hanna Gutow of Castine, finished as Hancock County’s top female runner. Gutow’s time of 44:23 placed her 11th in the women’s 15-19 age group and 596th overall. Other Hancock County finishers included Bryant Perkins of Bar Harbor (601st), Harley Brown of Mount Desert (703rd), Letson Douglass of Deer Isle (1,346th), Robin Clarke of Ellsworth (1,430th), Lori Lloyd of Bar Harbor (1,904th), Tom Kirby of Ellsworth (2,755th), Dana Douglass of Deer Isle (2,801st), Kyle Orcutt of Orland (2,903rd) and Jacqueline Carpenter of Bar Harbor (3,524th). The race drew a total of 8,087 runners from around the world. Jake Robertson of Hamilton, New Zealand, was the overall winner with a time of 27:37 — the second-fastest winning time in the history of the event — and 20-year-old Sandrafelis Chebet Tuei of Nairobi, Kenya, won the women’s title with a time of 31:21.
