BUCKSPORT — Hancock County runners competed in road races in Bucksport and Machias on Saturday.
Bucksport was home to the Dynamic Duo Cross-Country 3-Mile Race, which was held for the seventh time after beginning in 2012 as a benefit event for the Bucksport High School cross-country team. Twelve teams of two competed in the race, which combined the times of both runners to determine the winner.
First place went to Sara and Jim Hunt of Dedham, who posted a combined time of 41 minutes, 38 seconds. The two earned a narrow victory over Deedra and Ethan Dapice of Brewer, who combined for a time of 41:58 to claim second.
Katherine and Charlie Collins of Winterport claimed third place with a time of 43:11. Margaret Jones and Bradford Eslin of Bucksport earned fourth place with a combined time of 44:38, and another Bucksport duo, Byron Dossett and Lindsey Gordon, rounded out the top five in 45:04.
Washington County runners dominated the Blueberry 5-Mile Run field in Machias, but Hancock County did have a few competitors of its own. Michael Madell of Bar Harbor finished in 38th place with a time of 44:29, and Lloyd Harmon of Ellsworth (49th) and Robert Jones of Bar Harbor (76th) were also among the 90 finishers.
Eric Mauricette of Baileyville breezed to a first-place finish in the race with a winning time of 29:35, more than two and a half minutes better than the second-place finisher, Peter Williams of Lubec. Megan Lane of Portland was the top female runner, crossing the finish line in 37:29.
