Jogglers Win MDI Y 5K

BAR HARBOR — A throng of nearly 300 runners snaked through downtown Bar Harbor en route to Acadia National Park last Saturday as part of the Mount Desert Island YMCA annual half-marathon.

Robert Ashby, 43, of Brunswick placed first in the race with a time of 1:18:39 Matt Homich of Ellsworth finished second and Rob Shea II of Ellsworth was third.

The first Mount Desert Island resident to complete the race was 24-year-old Christopher Durkin of Bar Harbor. He finished in 1:27:34. His pace was steady at 6:24.

Jogglers Bob and Trish Evans of Iorn River, Wis., juggled the length of the 5K and placed first in the race out of 95 participants. Bob finished with a time of 18:22 and Trish — finishing first for the women — ran it in 21:16.

“We were both runners in college,” said Trish after the race. “And when we finished school, we didn’t know what to do with ourselves. We tried water polo, swing dancing, and joggling (juggling while jogging) — it’s the only thing that really stuck…I guess we still swing dance, too.”

Now, they both agree. It’s almost impossible to run without juggling.

“It’s a lot more fun to do both at the same time,” said Trish, she smiled and continued juggling, even after finishing the race.
