BAR HARBOR — Hundreds of runners are lacing up their shoes in anticipation of the YMCA Half Marathon and the family-oriented Fall 5K on Sept. 20.
The half marathon begins for all participants at the starting line at the Bar Harbor athletic fields at 7:30 a.m.
With more than nine miles of the half marathon course inside Acadia National Park, runners will funnel over the Duck Brook Bridge toward Eagle Lake, run around the lake and return to Bar Harbor along Route 233 and the Cromwell Harbor Road.
All participants in the 5K (3.1-mile) race will depart the athletic fields at 8:45 a.m. and complete a loop through downtown Bar Harbor to Cleftstone Road and down Route 233, ending near the Mount Desert Island Hospital.
The half marathon is closed to registration as the park caps the number of participants. Those wishing to participate in the 5K can register online at www.mdiymca.org. Registration is $25. Volunteers are also still welcome.
The race is the YMCA’s largest fund-raising event of the year, with proceeds funding the organization’s scholarship programs, among other ventures.
Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is the primary sponsor of the half marathon, and the Acadia Inn, Poor Boy’s Gourmet, Subway and the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce are also sponsors. 5K sponsors include Cool as a Moose, Fiore, Mount Desert Island Spring Water and EBS.
