Flattop 5K, Bridge the Gap to kick off road race season

ELLSWORTH — A pair of road races on back-to-back Saturdays, March 30 and April 7, will kick off the road racing season in Hancock County.

The eighth annual Flattop 5K, run in honor of the late Bill Pinkham, is scheduled for March 30 in Lamoine with a children’s one-mile fun run at 9:30 a.m. preceding the five-kilometer main event at 10.

Both races will begin and finish at the Lamoine Consolidated School.

The event is the first in the 2013 Jack Russell’s Steakhouse Points Series.

Entry fees are $1 for the fun run and $15 for the 5K, and runners should call Robin Emery at 667-9219 or Tom Kirby at 667-9771 for registration information.

A week later, on April 7, will come the second annual “Bridge the Gap” road race on Verona Island.

The event gets under way at 10 a.m. at Fort Knox in Prospect and will include a one-mile family fun run as well as 5K and 10K road races.

All runners will cross the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. The 10K course will take runners around Verona Island and the 5K course is an out-and-back on the island’s West Side Drive.

All races will finish at the Verona Island rest area.

Advance entry fees are $1 for the fun run, $15 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K, with proceeds going to support The Regional School Unit 25 seventh grade trip to Camp Kieve in April.
