WINTER HARBOR — The 11th annual George Schaefer Memorial Road Race is just a month away.
Registrations are now being taken for the event, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at Birch Harbor in conjunction with the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival.
Sponsored by Cadillac Mountain Sports, Ellsworth Building Supplies and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, the event actually includes two races, both beginning and ending at Wonsqueak Harbor.
Registration will get under way at 7 a.m. with a one-mile Kids’ Fun Run scheduled for 8 a.m, and the feature five-kilometer run/walk getting under way at 8:30.
Proceeds from the event support a scholarship program, in Schaefer’s name, for college-bound seniors graduating from Sumner Memorial High School.
The race is the seventh in this year’s Eden Athletics – Jack Russell’s Steak House Points Series.
Now in its sixth year, the series allows runners to earn points based on their overall or age-group finish in each of the races. At the end of the season, the points are totaled and awards are presented to the top finishers in their respective age groups.
