HERMON — Ellsworth’s Nate Smith has qualified for the weekend’s state golf championships following a strong showing in Tuesday’s Penobscot Valley Conference meet.
Smith, a senior, posted an 18-hole score of 84 to finish with tied Brewer’s Ethan Delmonaco for second place in the qualifying meet at Hermon Meadow Golf Club. He finished just two strokes back of the first-place finisher, Washington Academy sophomore Carson Prout.
Smith has been one of the top golfers for Ellsworth throughout the season. He finished as joint medalist for the Eagles Sept. 25 against Deer Isle-Stonington at Island Country Club and Oct. 25 against Deer Isle-Stonington at Lucerne Golf Course.
Mount Desert Island, which shot 352 as a team, qualified for the state team championships with a third-place finish. Emily Carter shot 90 to qualify for the state girls’ championships for the Trojans, who finished just one stroke back of runner-up John Bapst and six strokes back of first-place Hermon.
The state championships are set to tee off at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
