Duane B. Gray Memorial Golf Tournament draws record 88 participants

BLUE HILL — A total of 88 George Stevens Academy alumni, students, parents, faculty members and friends took part in the sixth edition of the Duane B. Gray Memorial Golf Tournament at the Blue Hill Country Club on Saturday.

The annual tournament honors Duane B. Gray, a 1964 GSA graduate who was an avid golfer as well as a pharmacist at Blue Hill’s Community Pharmacy before passing away in 2012. His nephew, Tom, represented Community Pharmacy at the tournament, which raised money for GSA’s annual fund.

A volunteer committee led by GSA Trustee and Development Committee Chairwoman Phyllis Taylor and the school’s golf coach, Dwayne Carter, organized the tournament. More than 60 local businesses pitched in with hole sponsorships and a variety of other contributions.

Champions were crowned in both the morning and afternoon. Ron Allen, John Bannister, Adam Gray and Mark Leonardi posted a gross score of 50 to claim the morning title, and Alex Drenga and Ebb Walton combined with current GSA seniors Finn Russet and Percy Zentz to win the afternoon championship.

Individual competitions were held to determine the longest drives on the seventh hole in both the morning and afternoon editions. Male and female morning competition winners were Mark Rosenthal and Kitty Clements, respectively, and Ebb Walton and Bebe Moulton won the afternoon contests.
