Trojans Rally for Win Over Warriors

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Trojans thrilled their fans with a 14-point rally in the late going to take a 27-26 victory over visiting Nokomis from Newport.

Both teams scored twice in the first half, with MDI touchdowns coming on runs of 43 and two yards by Jayson Burke and Nokomis scoring on runs by Dan Tucker.

But the Nokomis kicker made both extra point attempts while MDI managed just one, leaving the Trojans trailing 14-13 at halftime.

Nokomis added two more third-period touchdowns, one of them on a 72-yard run by Jake Welch, to take a lead of 26-13.

But the Trojans got a 24-yard touchdown run by Tyler Farnsworth to close the gap, and added two critical extra points on a pass from quarterback Duncan Smith to Donny Hanson.

The Trojans then recovered a Nokomis fumble at the Nokomis five-yard line and mounted a 95-yard drive capped by Elias Burne’s one-yard touchdown plunge with about four minutes remaining.

Farnsworth finished with 165 yards on 14 carries and Burne had 135 yards on 27 carries for MDI.
