Trojans Out Battle Lions



BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Trojans notched their second win of the season on Saturday, battling their way to a 30-20 win over the Belfast Lions.

Donny Hanson had a big day for the Trojans.

Hanson opened the scoring for MDI with a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown.

He followed that up with a 62-yard scoring run.

The Lions responded with a six-yard touchdown run by Jake Campbell and an 18-yard scoring run by Carl Dodge to take a 14-13 lead off the field at halftime.

In the third quarter, Elias Burne scored for MDI on an eight-yard touchdown run and Hanson fired a two-point conversion pass to Sean Harding to put the Trojans in front 21-14.

Campbell cut the lead to a single point for Belfast with a 52-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. But Hanson answered for the Trojans when he returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards for a touchdown.

Lucas Murphy capped the scoring for MDI in the fourth period when he tackled Belfast’s Zach Collier in the end zone for a safety.

MDI’s Burne carried the ball 19 times for 136 yards, Hanson finished with 107 yards rushing and Cameron Crawford kicked a pair of extra points.

Dodge led the 1-4 Lions with 121 yards rushing and Campbell finished with 111 yards.

Collier, the Belfast quarterback, also completed eight of 15 passes for 151 yards.

The Trojans will be on the road Saturday to face the Nokomis Warriors at 1:30 p.m. in Newport.
