READFIELD — The Ellsworth/Sumner football team’s inaugural season of eight-man play came to an end Friday night with a 44-12 loss to Maranacook in the large-school semifinals.
After top-ranked Maranacook (9-0) took a 22-0 lead in the firstquarter, Ellsworth/Sumner fought back with two Connor Crawford touchdown runs to cut the deficit to 22-12 going into the half. Yet the Black Bears responded with three second-half touchdowns to put the game out of reach and send the fourth-ranked Eagles (3-6) to a season-ending defeat.
Crawford rushed for 189 yards on 31 carries offensively and added five solo tackles and two assisted tackles on defense. The Eagles also got four solo tackles, one assisted tackle and an interception from J’Von James and four solo tackles and five assisted tackles from Noah Hughes.
In the Class D North playoffs, Bucksport (7-0) had a bye over the weekend as the No. 1 seed in the region. The Golden Bucks will host fifth-ranked Foxcroft (4-5) in the Northern Maine semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8. Bucksport defeated Foxcroft 53-0 when the teams met Oct. 25 in Dover-Foxcroft.
