Bucksport’s Gross commits to University of Maine

ORONO — Bucksport’s David Gross will continue his football career at the college level next season when he plays for the University of Maine.

Gross, a senior lineman at Bucksport, announced via social media Sunday that he had committed to the Black Bears. The senior traveled to Orono on Saturday for his official campus visit.

“It has been a dream of mine to be a Division I athlete since I started playing, and now that I get to play for my home state, [it] makes it so much more special,” Gross wrote on Twitter. “After talking with my family, it was a no-brainer on my commitment.

The commitment to Maine came one week after Gross won the Frank. J. Gaziano Memorial Offensive Lineman Award. The award is given annually to a lineman who displays “strong leadership on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”

Gross was named Little Ten Conference Player of the Year, Offensive Lineman of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year after leading the Golden Bucks to a 9-1 season and Northern Maine title in 2019.

At UMaine, Gross will join former Bucksport teammate Carter Tolmasoff, who was named LTC Player of the Year in 2018. Tolmasoff redshirted for the Black Bears in 2019.
