Bucksport, MDI football teams win big; Eagles fall to Mattanawcook Academy



BUCKSPORT — The Bucksport and Mount Desert Island football teams blew out their respective opponents Friday evening to post big Week 7 victories.

In Orono, Bucksport improved to 6-1 on the season with a 61-22 win over the Red Riots. The Golden Bucks led Orono (1-6) 34-16 at halftime before running away with the game in the second half.

MDI snapped a four-game losing streak with a 52-8 victory over John Bapst (1-6) in Bar Harbor. Elijah Joyce had 324 yards and five touchdowns for the Trojans, who improved to 2-5 with the Homecoming win.

Ellsworth/Sumner fell to 3-4 on the season with a 54-0 loss at home against Mattanawcook Academy (5-2). It was the third consecutive defeat for the Eagles.

Bucksport will host Ellsworth/Sumner in the regular season finale at 7 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 19. The Golden Bucks can secure second place in Class D North with a win, and the Eagles will assure themselves of a playoff spot if they pull off an upset victory.

MDI finishes the regular season at 7 p.m. next Friday when it faces Belfast (2-5) on the road. The Trojans would be eliminated from Class C North playoff contention with a loss.
