CUMBERLAND — With the tight pack that has been their strength all season, the Mount Desert Island Trojan girls ran their way to the Class B State Cross-county Championship on Saturday at the Twin Brook Recreation Area.
And they did it by trouncing the Camden Hills Windjammers — who had nipped them by one point for the Eastern Maine title a week earlier — by a decisive 16-point margin.
With sophomore Nora Hubbell leading the way with her ninth place finish in 20:46.87 over the 5,000-meter course, the Trojans put five runners among the top 16 finishers in a span of just 14 seconds.
Behind Hubbell came sophomore Isabel Erickson, 11th in 20:49.60; sophomore Olivia Erickson, 12th in 20:51.83; sophomore Maggie Painter, 14th in 20:56.56; and freshman Caroline Driscoll, 16th in 21:00.64.
“They were so close together that I didn’t even realize we had everybody in until I went down and counted all our teammates at the finish,” said MDI alternate Rebecca Planchart.
Rounding out the day for MDI were junior Malia Demers, 24th in 21:30.02, and junior Rachael McMinimy, 64th in 22:40.79.
MDI finished with 59 points with Camden Hills coming in with 75, despite a championship win by sophomore Brittany Bowman in 19:12.19 and a fifth place finish by freshman Willow Parker.
The Ellsworth Eagle girls, led by the fourth place finish of sophomore Aleta Looker in 20:08.40, finished ninth in the 13-team field with a score of 214.
Behind Looker for Ellsworth were freshman Haley Lawrence, 33rd in 21:56.50; senior Lauren Barkhouse, 69th in 22:45.56; junior Brooke Dunn, 70th in 22:45.82; senior Mallory Nightingale, 76th in 22:57.46; senior Jamie Ford, 83rd in 22:30.01; and freshman Mariah Brown, 84th in 23:30.91.
