Mariners Capture Own Invite

CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy placed four runners in the top six spots to capture the 2011 Mariner Cross Country Invitational.  Cameron Roy (Orrington) placed second with a time of 28:25, crossing 14 seconds behind the individual champion, Phillip Brody (New Sweden) of Maine-Presque Isle.

Brody topped a field of 20 runners from three schools. Thomas College finished second, paced by the fourth place finish of William Janakis (South Berwick) with a 29:47.

MMA landed its top five runners in the top ten.  Jurgen Pilot (Bangor) finished third in 29:47 and Wyatt LaPage (Portsmouth, N.H.) crossed fifth at 30:20. Noel Deserres-Gauthier (Dover, N.H.) placed sixth finishing the eight-kilometer course in 30:42, while Patrick Lindsey (Winthrop) rounded out the scoring five with a ninth place finish in 32:47.

In addition to Janakis, the Terriers placed another pair of runners in the top ten. David Tirabassi (Lewistown) and Keith Pike (South Berwick) finished in seventh an eight place, respectively. Tirabassi posted a 31:16, while Pike finished in 31:18. Joseph Fishman’s (Presque Isle) 33:54 was good for 12th place, while Dan Collins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) crossed a spot behind 32 seconds later to round out Thomas’ scoring contingent.

UMPI’s Jaron Gray (Danforth) was the second Owl and 14th runner across the line. The freshman logged a 34:42. Gray was followed by Tim Chase (Houlton) in 16th place at 37:15, Richard Landry (Millvillage) in 17th place at 37:47, while Zack Abbotoni (Houlton) crossed 20th in 41:12.

The Mariner Invitational featured its unique traditions of starting with a musket shot and ending with the victorious team cutting cake for the participants and fans on hand. In starting a new tradition, this year’s top three finishers were awarded sledgehammers for putting the hammer down on the course.

Maine Maritime returns to action on the 30th at the North Atlantic Conference Championships.
