Ellsworth’s MacPherson, Sumner’s Barnes win events at PVC cross-country championships



ELLSWORTH — Hancock County cross-country runners were among the strongest performers Saturday at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

In Class B, Ellsworth junior Caitlin MacPherson won the girls’ race by more than a half-minute with a time of 20 minutes, 17.3 seconds. MDI’s Katelyn Osborne and Olivia Johnson finished third and fifth with times of 21:02.4 and 21:26.8, respectively.

Emma McKechnie of Ellsworth also placed in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish, and MDI’s Rachelle Swanson took ninth as the Trojans won the Class B girls’ competition with 32 points. The Ellsworth girls did not place as a team, as they did not meet the five-runner requirement.

MDI placed third of nine teams with 94 points on the boys’ side, and Ellsworth took fourth with 106. Individually, Ellsworth’s Matt Shea placed sixth of 62 runners with a time of 17:47.8.

In Class C, Sumner sophomore Luke Barnes was the top boys’ finisher with a time of 17:57.0. Caden Mattson finished third with a time of 18:19.0 for the George Stevens Academy boys, who earned 40 points to place second behind Orono.

GSA also placed second on the girls’ side in Class C with 68 points. Grace Broughton, Lanny Zentz, Oshi Ragot and Susanna Jakub placed 13th-16th for the Eagles, who were the only Class C girls’ team to receive a team score, as Bucksport and Sumner did not meet the five-runner requirement.
