Hancock County teams qualify for state cross-country meet



BELFAST — The Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island and George Stevens Academy boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams all qualified for next weekend’s state cross-country meet at Saturday’s Northern Maine regional event.

John Hassett finished first in the individual portion of the boys’ event with a time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds to lead GSA to a second-place finish overall in the team event. MDI finished third in Class B, and Ellsworth finished seventh.

“This has been a very good year for Hancock County runners,” Ellsworth coach Louis Luchini said. “We’ve seen a lot of records set everywhere.”

The MDI girls’ team won the Class B event, which Tia Tardy won with a time of 19:02. Ellsworth finished seventh in that event and made the cutoff by two sports. Eliza Broughton, Mary Richardson and Zeya Lorio helped GSA win the Class C team event by coming in second, third and fourth, respectively.
