ELLSWORTH — The high school cross-country season reached the halfway point last week with local runners competing in meets in Ellsworth and Searsport.
On Friday, runners from Bucksport and George Stevens Academy traveled to Searsport. GSA came away with a pair of team wins by topping the Golden Bucks and host Vikings in the boys’ and girls’ competitions.
Bucksport’s William Hileman finished in 17 minutes, 50.40 seconds to top GSA’s Clark Morrison (18:07.35) for first place in the boys’ race. Andrew Hipsky and Sol Lorio finished third and fourth for GSA with times of 19:10.68 and 19:11.19, respectively, and Bucksport’s Anthoney Smith rounded out the top five with a time of 20:00.51.
In the girls’ race, GSA’s Thea Crowley ran away from the pack to win with a time of 20:31.31. Fellow Eagle Grace Broughton took second with a time of 23:23.64, and Rebekah Ireland finished in 23:41.97 to place third for Bucksport.
In Ellsworth, the Mount Desert Island boys notched a perfect score of 15 points to edge Ellsworth for first place in Saturday’s meet. The MDI girls also scored 15 points to win the team event uncontested.
MDI’s Ponce Saltysiak won the boys’ race with a time of 14:55.79, and Cody Parker, Jon Genrich, Sam York and Spencer Rose took the next four spots to give the Trojans a sweep of the top five. Ellsworth’s Calvin Nelson (16:27.05) and Deer Isle-Stonington’s Henry Penfold (17:19.46) took sixth and 10th, respectively.
Callan Eason (18:47.95), Grace Munger (19:11.69), Ella Joyce (19:34.01), Olivia Johnson (19:45.77), Cassidy Hanscom (19:53.69) and Piper Soares (20:21.22) completed a sweep of the top six for the MDI girls. Ellsworth’s Leah MacPherson took seventh with a time of 20:35.61.
Runners for all five local teams will compete at Bucksport High School at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.
