Gerry Clapper is inducted into UM Sports Hall of Fame

ORONO — Gerry Clapper of Bucksport was one of six former athletes to be inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.

One of the top runners in Maine history, Clapper was a 12-time letter-winner in cross-country and track and field at UMaine.

He was a two-year cross-country captain and won a Maine championship in 1981 and the EIAA Eastern title in 1982.

In indoor track and field, Clapper won the EIAA Eastern championship in 1983 in the two-mile run.

In outdoor track, he won the Maine championship and the EIAA Eastern championship in 5,000 meters in 1983

Upon graduation in 1983, Clapper held UMaine records in the mile, two-mile, 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs and the four-mile relay.

He still holds the 10,000-meter school record with a time of 29:59.64 and the distance medley (440-880-1,320-mile) relay record at 11:18.7.
