Ellsworth Boys, MDI Girls Win at Caribou Invitational

CARIBOU — The Ellsworth Eagle boys and the Mount Desert Island Trojan girls recorded perfect scores in winning Saturday’s five-kilometer cross-country competition at the Caribou Invitational.

The event was a departure from the traditional cross-country races, with races scored for each of the seven varsity runners of each competing team.

Points were assessed based on the order of finish in each race with the total points each team’s five top finishers totaled for a team score. Those with the lowest scorers were the winners.

For the Eagle boys and the Trojan girls, five of their runners finished first in their sections, giving each team a perfect five points.

In boys’ event 1 (top-seeded runners of each team), Ellsworth junior Dan Curts bested 10 other runners, turning in a winning time of 15 minutes, 48.01 seconds, the fastest of the day.

MDI’s top seed, sophomore Jordan Harris, was fourth in 18:18.37.

In event 2 (number two runners), Ellsworth sophomore Cooper Holmes was the winner in 17:34.33 with MDI’ sophomore Ralph Magnani fourth in 18:57.36.

In event 3, Ellsworth junior Brayden Beardsley was second in 18:06.10 and MDI sophomore Ethan Craigo was third in 18:39.02.

In event 4, junior Robert Looker of the Eagles was first in 18:12.80 and MDI junior Ransom Burgess was third in 19:06.83.

In event 5, Ellsworth junior Frank King was first in 19:12.75 and junior Will Richard of MDI was second in 19:25.33.

In event 6, freshman Talor Hamilton of Ellsworth was first in 19:58.77 and junior Andy Gallup of MDI was third in 21:15.10.

In event 7, freshman Dylan Harris of MDI was first in 19:43.07 and senior Nate Dorr of Ellsworth was fourth in 21:31.95.

Boys’ team scores were Ellsworth 5, Caribou 9, MDI 12, John Bapst 17, Presque Isle 21, Old Town 29 and Hermon 32.

In the girls’ competition:

In event 1, Ellsworth junior Aleta Looker won with in 19:29.62,  the fastest girls’ time of the day, and junior Maggie Painter of the Trojans was second in 19:47.60.

In event 2, junior Nora Hubbell of the Trojans was first in 20:57.32 and sophomore Hayley Lawrence of Ellsworth was fifth in 23:20.32.

In event 3, MDI sophomore Waylon Henggeler was first in 20:53.63 and Ellsworth sophomore Mariah Brown was sixth in 24:29.52.

In event 4, junior Isabel Erickson of MDI was first in 21:40.71 and senior Kelsey Leighton of Ellsworth was sixth in 26:26.70.

In event 5, MDI junior Olivia Erickson was first in 22:07.60 and sophomore Olivia Lounder of Ellsworth was fifth in 26:29.92.

In event 6, sophomore Caroline Driscoll of MDI was first in 22:10.37 and senior Saki Takahashi of Ellsworth was fifth in 27:32.29.

In event 7, MDI freshman Sierra Tapley was second in 23:46.85 and freshman Katie Walton of Ellsworth was sixth in 31:39.17.

Girls’ team scores were MDI 5, Caribou 9, John Bapst 16, Washburn 17, Ellsworth 22, Presque Isle 27, Old Town 34 and Hermon 36.


In the annual Bucksport Invitational on Saturday, the George Stevens Academy girls finished second and the GSA boys were third as the Orono Red Riots took top team honors in both varsity races.

In the boys’ competition, it was Orono the winner with 26 points, followed by Lee Academy 88, GSA 93, Bucksport 109, Central 124, Calais 135, Sumner 137 and Washington Academy 164.

Orono’s Tyler White was the individual winner with a time of 16:48, edging GSA runner-up Sam Stahnke by 10 seconds.

Also for GSA, Delvin Valle was 18th in 19:23; Adam Witham was 24th in 20:05; Devon Oppedisano was 38th in 22:13; and Baxter Forrest was 44th in 23:01.

For Bucksport, Robin Doyle led the way, placing 14th in 18:32. He was followed by Skyler Fraga, 17th in 19:02; Adam Bohlen, 22nd in 19:52; Taylor Soteres, 31st in 21:10; Alex Bourgon, 36th in 21:26; and Amaziah Jones, 39th in 22:21.

For Sumner, Brandon Wade was 11th in 18:24, Kyle Jordan was 21st in 19:41, Braden Wentworth was 29th in 21:06, Patrik Orcutt was 41st in 22:37 and Christian Kimball was 48th in 24:57.

Lily Koffman of Orono won the girls’ varsity race in 19:52 as the Red Riots finished with 25 points.

They were followed by GSA 60, Bucksport 68 and Lee Academy 76.

For GSA, Hanna Gutow was fourth in 22:11, Madison Cole was 10th in 23:30, Cedar Slagle was 11th in 24:25, Brooke Wentworth was 16th in 25:56, Schuyler Williamson was 19th in 27:41 and Joun Liu was 20th in 27:49.

For Bucksport, Natalie Coleman was third in 21:34, Amber Hall was 13th in 24:57, Chloe Stubbs was 14th in 25:29, Samantha Boothby was 17th in 26:14 and Taylor Graffam-Drew was 21st in 28:05.
