ELLSWORTH — The 2021 cross-country season opened Saturday with runners from all six Hancock County schools competing at Ellsworth High School.
Mount Desert Island brought home a pair of team wins as it edged Orono to win the boys’ and girls’ events. Individually, runners from MDI, Bucksport and George Stevens Academy were among the top finishers.
Bucksport’s William Hileman claimed victory in the boys’ race as he finished with a time of 16 minutes, 6.99 seconds. Hileman was joined in the top 10 by MDI’s Sam York (third place, 17:14.55), GSA’s Clark Morrison (sixth place, 17:54.32) and MDI’s Liam McKernan (ninth, 18:19.75).
Sumner’s Kaleb Colson (14th place, 18:40.01), MDI’s Tucker James (16th place, 18:48.31), Spencer Rose (17th, 18:49.15) and Callahan Bryer (18th, 18:52.51), GSA’s Sol Lorio (19th, 18:57.63) and Bucksport’s Gage Bruns (20th, 18:57.94) rounded out the top 20. Deer Isle-Stonington’s Henry Penfold (21st, 18:57.94) and Ellsworth’s Aedyn Hughes (30th, 19:34.13) were the top finishers for their respective schools.
On the girls’ side, GSA’s Thea Crowley placed third with a time of 18:46.61. Amelia VanDongen (fourth place, 20:38.64), Callan Eason (sixth place, 21:17.04), Grace Munger (seventh, 21:28.39), Ella Joyce (ninth, 21:34.75) and Piper Soares (10th, 21:34.79) finished in the top 10 for MDI.
Addison Nelson finished as the top runner for Ellsworth as she posted a time of 21:49.30 to place 12th in the 50-runner field. Ada Fisher (20th place, 23:55.46) and Rebekah Ireland (22nd place, 24:17.96) were the top finishers for Sumner and Bucksport, respectively.
Bucksport will host GSA, Narraguagus, Bangor Christian, Central, Dexter, Foxcroft, John Bapst, Old Town, Orono, Presque Isle and Washington Academy for a home meet at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Ellsworth will compete at Caribou High School at noon.
