ELLSWORTH — The Sumner Tigers were ruuners-up in Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Conference Small Schools Cheerleading Championships at Stearns High School in Millinocket.
The Tigers scored 122.3, falling just short of the Orono Red Riots, who scored 125.2. Members of the Tiger squad are Jalisa Patten, Whitney Doughty, Sarah Frost, coach Monica Chipman, Jordan Knowles, Ashley Andrews and Brianna Bishko, assistant coach Melissa Rice, Josie Barker, Emily Ingalls, Jordan Rivers, Jacob Backman, Haley Sandstrom, Brooke Raynor, Maria Lockhart, Ashtyn Thomas, Kelsey Martin, Lexi Tracey and assistant coach Kayla Knowles.
The Ellsworth Eagles and the Bucksport Golden Bucks competed in the PVC Large Schools Cheering Championships held at Ellsworth.
Hermon was the winner with 132.7 points, followed by John Bapst with 123.7, Presque Isle with 119.30 and Ellsworth with 119.10. Bucksport finished seventh among the nine teams with 101.4.
While most Class B schools will be competing again Saturday at the Big East Championships at 1 p.m. in Old Town, Sumner will host an invitational tournament starting at noon at the high school in Sullivan. Competing teams will include the host Tigers, Machias, Jonesport-Beals, Orono, Washington Academy, Narraguagus, George Stevens Academy, Calais and Bucksport. The competition will include two rounds of performances and each team’s scores will be averaged to determine the final rankings.
