LINCOLN — The Sumner cheer team added it to its early-season trophy haul Saturday afternoon with a first-place finish in the Penobscot Valley Conference Class C championships at Mattanawcook Academy.
Sumner topped second-place Central and third-place Mattanawcook Academy to win the title. It was the second championship win of the season for the Tigers, who won the Downeast Athletic Conference title Jan. 11.
At the meet, Sumner’s Jessica Snowdeal and Monica Pettegrow were announced as PVC Class C Coaches of the Year. The co-coaches also shared the honor in 2019 after leading the Tigers to a DVC championship and a second-place finish at PVCs.
Bucksport, competing in its first competitive meet of the season, finished fifth behind the aforementioned teams and fourth-place Houlton. Calais, Dexter, Foxcroft and Orono rounded out the rest of the nine-team field.
In Presque Isle, Ellsworth finished second to Hermon in the PVC Class B championships. The runner-up finish was the second in as many weeks for the Eagles, who fell just 1.2 points short of Hermon at Big Easts.
Local teams will return to action for their respective Northern Maine championship meets next Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The Class B North competition will begin at 9 a.m. with Class the D North/South and Class C North competitions set to follow at 11:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., respectively.
