Sumner cheer team wins DAC crown; EHS takes 2nd at Big Easts

BAILEYVILLE — After nearly not traveling to its opening meet, the Sumner cheer team started its 2020 season in winning fashion.

Sumner won the Downeast Athletic Conference title Saturday with a first-place finish in the four-team meet at Woodland High School. The Tigers beat out Calais, Machias and Woodland to claim the championship.

In anticipation of icy road conditions farther Downeast, Sumner announced early Friday morning that it would not be traveling to Baileyville for the meet due to travel concerns. The school reversed that decision Saturday morning following changes in the weather forecast.

Elsewhere Saturday, the Ellsworth cheer team took second place in the Big East Conference championships at Hermon High School. The Eagles finished with 79.5 points, just 1.2 shy of the host team.

Local teams will be back in action for their respective Penobscot Valley Conference championship meets Saturday, Jan. 18. Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island will compete in the Class B meet at Presque Isle High School at 11 a.m., and Sumner and Bucksport will compete in the Class C meet at Mattanawcook Academy at 4 p.m.
