SULLIVAN — Three Hancock County cheer teams concluded abbreviated 2021 seasons as the results of the virtual state championships were announced.
Sumner capped off another successful campaign as it claimed second-place honors in Class C. Ellsworth and Bucksport also concluded their seasons with sixth- and 12th-place finishes in their respective events, the results of which were released Saturday afternoon.
Sumner, the reigning state champion in Class C, received 48.9 points to finish second to Monmouth Academy’s 50.7. Calais (47.6 points). Central (43.5 points) and Houlton (42.0) rounded out the top five in the Class C field.
Bucksport received 32.7 points in its 12th-place finish. The Golden Bucks beat out Madison, Orono, Mount View, Dirigo, Oak Hill, Foxcroft and Spruce Mountain in the 19-team event.
In Class B, Ellsworth racked up 51.4 points to finish in the top third of the 21-team field. The Eagles finished behind Hermon (64.4 points), Medomak Valley (61.2 points), Freeport (56.8), Leavitt (55.0) and Morse (53.9).
Both Sumner and Ellsworth had placed second in their respective Penobscot Valley championship events two weeks earlier. Bucksport took eighth place in the 10-team PVC Class C field.
Bangor (Class A) and Penobscot Valley (Class D) claimed state championships in the other divisions. Bangor racked up 65.0 points to beat out Biddeford (64.5 points), and Penobscot Valley scored 50.2 points to beat out seven-time defending champ Central Aroostook (49.3 points) for the title.
