BANGOR — The Ellsworth Eagles and the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners took top honors and the Sumner Tigers were runners-up Saturday in the Eastern Maine Cheering Championships at the Bangor Auditorium.

In the Class B competition, Ellsworth caught a break when the defending state champion Hermon Hawks, who had performed ahead of the Eagles, were assessed a five-point deduction for an error on one of their stunts.

The Eagles made the most of the opportunity, turning in a strong performance to best the runner-up Hawks 142.2 to 138.8.

It was the second consecutive Eastern Maine title for the Eagles, who defeated Hermon last year before the Hawks went on to win the state title two weeks later.

As was the case last year, the teams will face each other again in two weeks at the state championships, which will be held at the Bangor Auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 9.

This year’s Ellsworth squad includes just four seniors — Cristin Wright, Heather Holt, Anna Jordan and Kat Dickens — along with Felicia Ridley, Emma Sweeney, Emily Bridges-Myrick, Kristy Eaton, Ashley Ballard, Marina Magee, Victoria Page Jackson, Brittani Moulton and Emily Lane.

They are coached by Courtney Taylor and Nikki Chan.

Also advancing to the state competition were the Caribou Vikings (134.8), Presque Isle Wildcats (134.3), John Bapst Crusaders (127.8) and Old Town Coyotes (124.76).

The Mount Desert Island Trojans (114.6) placed eighth among the 12 Class B teams.

Saturday’s Class D competition combined squads from both Eastern and Western Maine.

The Mariners ended the five-year reign of Central Aroostook from Mars Hill, outpointing the Panthers 124 to 116.8 for their first-ever regional title.

Members of the Mariners squad, coached by Kimberley Larsen, include Sarah Wilson, Sara Eaton, Stephanie Siebert, Danielle Powers, Amber Jones, Sarah Burgess, Paige Rollins, Marissa Donovan, Tessa Bray, Belle Merritt, Kennady Eatojh and Alicia Allen.

Also advancing to the Class D state competition were the Machias Bulldogs (100.9), Bangor Christian Patriots (96.9), Penobscot Valley Howlers (83.3), Washburn Beavers (82.3), Buckfield Bucks (82.1) and Jonesport-Beals Royalettes (77.6).

In Class C, Sumner’s Tigers scored 118.8 points to finish 6.2 points behind the champion Dexter Tigers.

Both teams will advance to the state championships along with the Orono Red Riots (115.5), Houlton Shiretowners (113), Bucksport Golden Bucks (112.3) and Central Red Devils (111.1).

Members of the Sumner squad, coached by Courtney Briggs, include Emma Fitzgerald, Jordan Hanscom, Cassidy Andrews, Hannah Fleming, Emily Martin, Aiyla Petty, Cynthia Stewart, Katrina Hayward, Whitney Ranco, Sarah Young, Alexandria Tracey, Amie O’Hara and Oliva Driver.

The State Cheering Championships will be held at the Bangor Auditorium on Saturday, February 9.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. with Classes B and C scheduled to compete at 10 a.m. and Class D at 3 p.m.
